LYNWOOD UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT HOSTS 7TH ANNUAL STATE OF THE DISTRICT

The Lynwood Unified School District in partnership with Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation hosted their 7th annual State of the District.

LYNWOOD, Calif. — In partnership with the Lynwood Partners Educational Foundation (LPEF), the Lynwood Unified School District (LUSD) hosted community members, elected officials, supporters, and stakeholders at its 7th Annual State of the District event on October 4, 2024. Held at the District’s Board Room, breakfast was provided by the Lynwood High School Culinary Art students by the direction of Olga Muñoz, the gathering highlighted the District's recent achievements, upcoming projects, and overall status of the school district.

The event began with a spirited performance by the Firebaugh High School Cheerleaders, followed by a vibrant dance from Ballet Folklorico. Superintendent Dr. Gudiel R. Crosthwaite then welcomed attendees, stating, “[I’m] starting my eighth year here in the mighty Lynwood Unified School District. Every day, I am grateful for the opportunity to be able to serve, collaborate, and work with each of you to do some incredible things for our youth.”

Stephen Faulk, vice president of LPEF, celebrated the foundation’s accomplishments, including awarding over $100,000 in scholarships to the 2024 LUSD graduates. In addition to scholarships, Faulk discussed the impact of the Lynwood Alumni Center, teacher and school grants, the Lynwood food pantry, and the Lynwood Run. He also announced that nominations for the foundation's second annual Lynwood Alumni Gala are open through Nov. 1, 2024. Furthermore, Faulk introduced the Lynwood Gives initiative, which runs from Oct. 25 to Nov. 1, 2024, inviting the community to donate to the campaign to support students, teachers, and schools through grants and scholarships.

Dr. Crosthwaite shared a personal story of his upbringing, reflecting on his own challenges and the impact of landmark cases like Brown v. Board of Education and Mendez v. Westminster. These cases underscored the significance of legacy and the importance of investing in youth. Dr. Crosthwaite also covered topics such as rising graduation rates, current educational quality, and student well-being. He highlighted the district’s recognition by California for its Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) programs, which use a three-tiered framework to promote students' behavioral, academic, social, emotional, and mental health. The event also addressed the importance of upcoming legislation, including the Measure U bond and Proposition 2, which are expected to increase funding for school maintenance and program expansions. 

The program concluded with Samantha Barrios, president of Lynwood High School’s La Raza Club, performing the song "Los Laureles" by José López. Her rendition was followed by a video montage of students sharing their hopes and dreams for the future. The students took the stage and thanked the community for supporting their future.
